Just figured the work around to this over in the Ubuntu newsgroup:
Bring up firefox
type "about:config" in url bar
search for "general.useragent.vendor" change the string to "firefox" (it
will probably be set at your distribution's name)
I ran into the same problem using my (K)ubuntu systems and applying this
fixed cured the inability to enter in new emails etc.

How does one make that persist? It seems to revert to "Ubuntu" every time
the browser is restarted. |

Maybe that's because this is a Suse group :)
I changed it from SUSE to Firefox and it does stay that way :)

You use Linux to get away from Microsoft the cry when Microsoft's FREE
Hotmail doesn't work right? Double standard?
Would you still be using Windows if it were free?
Well, asshole, some of us have family members who have had msn accounts
for years - started with our first DSL. They have many contacts there and
it's a pain it the butt to transfer that to something else. I've tried
over the years to get the wife to switch to our netfirms account - it may
become a reality, but in the meantime, it is not pleasant.
|
Is asshole your family name? |

Nope. Still can't reply or compose email in hotmail. I guess I can close
that Microshaft account and be done with them forever.
|
I posted to the other string but my Suse 10.3 is using FF 3.0.4 and that
works 100%, enters text in the message area and no version warning
screen. My Suse 11.0 is using FF 3.0.3 and that can't enter message text
in Hotmail. |

Then I suspect the problem is at your end of things....using this simple
fix not only rectified the problem for my systems but also others who
were experiencing the same problem in the Ubuntu newsgroup. FWIW, the
hotmail browser upgrade page has firefox as a viable browser to use when
accessing the site and even has a hyperlink direct to the firefox site.
Actually, again for what it's worth, your response is the first one I
have received where it didn't work. |

I got curious and tried.
Yes, same symptoms first with FF 3.0.3.
They suggested that I'd upgrade which I didn't. I'll do that when it
comes from openSUSE

The firefox link on the upgrade is direct to the firefox site. :-)

Good to hear that someone else can confirm this for SUSE....I know it

Thanks for letting us know. :-)

Using FF v3.0.3 on my openSUSE and just doubled checked the
setting...still set at "firefox". Might want to make sure that when you
quit firefox, use the File --> Quit and not just the upper right hand X
to exit the program.
Same advice for the Ubuntu query too. |

I haven't been looking at all.
I know version upgrades can be done by getting them from additional
repositories/adding additional repositories like Mozilla.
I don't fancy doing version upgrades for no reason though.
I haven't seen any reason to upgrade FF.

I was able to log into KDE as root and it worked fine (stayed edited)
and worked fine on Hotmail.
If I log in another user account it works fine. In My user account it
will not save. Now Seamonkey about:config save works fine and Seamonkey
works on Hotmail. Only in my account and only Firefox will not save. As
a matter of fact it changes back to SUSE as soon as I hit the close
button, I can see it change back. Now ain't that odd?
