Apparently Microshaft has blocked Linux users from using Hotmail. I had
my account with them since day one. I have been receiving mail just fine
but when I tried to reply or compose it would not let me run the editor
or type anything. Tried both Firefox and Seamonkey latest editions even
with the User Agent Switcher on Explorer 7 (Vista) emulation.
Not that I don't have other email accounts, just thought it was pretty
fucked up of them with being buddies with Novell.

Just because they have a deal of working together on SERVERS and that
Microsoft basically bought several thousands SLES licences does not mea
anything but that.

They are still competitors and not buddies.

Besides that, why keep using hotmail? There are better free email
services out there.

Just figured the work around to this over in the Ubuntu newsgroup:

Bring up firefox
type "about:config" in url bar
search for "general.useragent.vendor"
change the string to "firefox" (it will probably be set at your
distribution's name)

I ran into the same problem using my (K)ubuntu systems and applying this
fixed cured the inability to enter in new emails etc. Smile

do not realize that to M$ 'interoperability' has always been a one-way street?

You use Linux to get away from Microsoft the cry when Microsoft's FREE
Hotmail doesn't work right? Double standard?

Would you still be using Windows if it were free?

I use dozens of them, hotmail is just one where many still have that
address in their address book. Besides yahoo, aol, staroffice,
roadrunner, gmail what are some that you use?

I may have never perused Linux distros had I not had a grudge about
Microshaft's licensing policy about using MY os on multiple computers.
But now I would never go back even if Windows became free.
Hotmail is just an email holdover from the past and many use it to
contact me. I have dozens of free email accounts from others.

Nope. Still can't reply or compose email in hotmail. I guess I can close
that Microshaft account and be done with them forever.

Have you considered using Thunderbird? You can receive email from

Hotmail using the Webmail/Hotmail addons. Then you can use a smtp
account from another email to send.

I got curious and tried.

Yes, same symptoms first with FF 3.0.3.
They suggested that I'd upgrade which I didn't. I'll do that when it
comes from openSUSE :)

I then changed the line as suggested above, from SUSE to Firefox.

It worked, I had to sign out and back in though.

houghi.org

When I went from hotmail.com and from the forwarder tande.com and from
my provider, I send everybody that I wanted to know my new adress.

I once even had about 50+ accounts on many different mail services, but
I dropped them all for the convenience of using one single point of
contact.

You could try Opera or Konquror. If you run GNOME it could be that you
need to install them first. You could even try lynx, links and w3m, but
I doubt that those will work.

Also turn off every protection you have on Firefox. Be certain not to
use anything that might block any content.

Well, asshole, some of us have family members who have had msn accounts
for years - started with our first DSL. They have many contacts there and
it's a pain it the butt to transfer that to something else. I've tried
over the years to get the wife to switch to our netfirms account - it may
become a reality, but in the meantime, it is not pleasant.
