I'm attempting to install a Hewlett Packard 2100TN printer on a system
on which I just installed Windows XP.
If I power up with the printer attached and on, I get the "Found New
Hardware Wizard" pop-up that says "Cannot Install This Hardware".
"There Was a Problem Installing This Hardware". "An Error Occurred
During The Installation of This Device". "The RPC Server is
Unavailable".
When I click "Add a Printer" in the "Printer and Faxes" folder I gt a
pop-up that says "Operation Could Not Be Completed. The Print Spooler
Service s Not Running".
I'd appreciated any ideas on what to do to correct this problem.

I'm assuming this is a USB device. Normally when installing any USB
device the first thing you would do is run the installation software and
then plug the device in when requested by the software. Have you got a
cd that came with the printer. If not, you're going to have to go to
the HP website and download the software from there.
Not a complete answer, but hopefully it gets you started.

Remove All_stRESS before sending me an email

You can look to see if the print spooler is in fact running and manually
start it if needed.
One way to do this is to go to the "My Computer" icon and right click on it.
Choose "Manage"
Then choose "Services and Applications" and pick "Services" under that
option.
Scroll down the window until you get to "print spooler" If it does not
indicate it is "Started" in the status column you can kick start if from
here. Double click on the "print spooler" entry and a new window should
open. Find the "Startup Type" option and make it read Automatic.
Then if the service is not already running, click on the Start button.
Close out any windows you may have opened in the process to clean things up
a bit.
Then go back and try your "Add a Printer" routine again and see if this has
fixed things. |

I had nothing but problems with the PCs I've had over the years and
the biggest issue seems to be that there is no such thing as "step-by-
step instructions because every system seems to be different, so there
are nothing but road blocks to overcome and I generally don't get
fixed what I need to.
This is no different. You lost me at "Manage". There is no such word
on the menu when I right-click "My Computer".

I too run into different flavors of XP depending on how they were setup.
Updates and such add many things to the mix as well. Makes telephone
support difficult at times.
See if your computer has the following choices.
Left click on Start
Choose Settings and then Control Panel or open your control panel any way
you know how.
Once you have the Control Panel opened see if you have an option for
Administrative Tools. If it's there open it and with luck you will see
Services. Open Services and with luck you will find Print Spooler there as
an option.
From there you should be able to start it if it's not running.

I often have problems installing these USB HP printers. As mentioned in the
previous advice, it is very important to follow the instructions exactly,
especially about running the software BEFORE plugging in the device.
My problem was solved last time by turning off all anti-virus, firewall, or
security programs. That has worked for me.

The quickest way to get the services list is to click on the start
button, then click on run and in the box type 'services.msc' without the
quotes and press return/enter on your keyboard.
