Can we say they are found in /var/log? Or is that not consistent
over the distributions?

That's a start, he now knows there's more than one log file.
Can we say they are found in /var/log? Or is that not consistent

It's pretty much consistent across all normal distros.
There're a few quirky ones of course, but redhat isn't one of them.
