I would like my debian computers to run the latest kernel. At the
moment they are running on 2.4 Kernels. I want to run on Kernel
2.6.8.1.

How do I do this ?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

What are you running? Stable, testing or unstable?

Yeah, I definately need a 2.6 Kernel.

I have several machines ranging from a Pentium 100 with 32Mb RAM
through to an AMD K7 2800 MHz

Some of my machines run in text mode as servers, my other machines
have ATI Radeon 3d cards and sound cards fitted.

My text based machines cannot run the latest debian installer
programs, for one reason or another

and my newer machines fail to start the GUI using a debian installer
(old or new)

However, I have managed to get my newer machines running on Mandrake,
which has a 2.6 Kernel.

Unfortunately, I don't want Mandrake, I want Debian and all the source
code files.

I want to be running the same system on all machines on the network.

I intend to do some development work.

My Pentium 100, which is text only and accessed via a Telnet session
does the compiling and testing for all machines on the network.

Because of version differences, I am having difficulty running
programs that have been compiled on this machine to run on other
machines.

I hope to eventually build a linux disk that can be deployed on any
machine for any purpose, whether it be a Pentium text only machine
acting as a server, or a high spec 3d games machine with sound.

To further complicate this task, the hardware in all my machines
varies, I have different sound cards, different network cards,
different amounts of ram, etc

I need a system that can be scaled up or down accordingly.

Yeah, I definately need a 2.6 Kernel.

Go here if you definitely must:
http://www.linuxcompatible.org/print26559.html

That was the only relevant URL I found (I couldn't find the compile HOWTO)
and admittedly I didn't look too hard but that's your job. ;-)

I can't vouch for the site though and have no idea whether it works or not.

Mentioning those reasons could get you some help to sort them out. And what
do you mean by installer programs?

By GUI do you mean X? If so that has nothing to do with the kernel.

Is that the reason you want a 2.6 kernel? I'm not sure that that's the issue
but I don't have that much to go on.

[snip the rest]

There's not much specific information there so it's difficult to know
whether you just want the URL (or similar URL) above or whether you
actually want more specific help with any issues you're having. If the
latter then you'll have to be more specific.

PS You're still posting your address.

Wait for the official debian 3.1 release, upgrade to testing or

unstable, or get the source code from kernel.org.

He asked *what* you're running, not where you're running /from/.

If you can live with kernel 2.6.7, backports.org has a ready-built deb for
this on stable.

You'll find the kernel-package tool useful. It will make a kernel package
..deb for you from a configured ready to go kernel source. Just download
the source, do a make configure, then I use a script like this:

#!/bin/bash
REVISION=`date '+%Y.%m.%d.%H.%M'`
echo "Revision: $REVISION"
make-kpkg --rootcmd fakeroot --revision $REVISION kernel_image

You'll need to make-kpkg clean between as well, as it gets upset with the
revision changing all the time, but the changing revision lets you try out
multiple attempts.

You'll need fakeroot as well.
