Thanks. I think I'm taking a vacation from working on my Linux setup until
I get the external modem I ordered in the mail.
I tried your suggestion. Actually, I had to use a 3.3.6 X server with my
video chipset, and the XF86Config generated by 3.3.6's XF86Setup din't even
have a module section. I added the module section from the default 4.3.0
XF86Config, and with a minor change (remove the subsection), 3.3.6 didn't
report any errors reading it. However, still no GL support.
I appreciate your suggestion.
Thanks

Does the output of mount say your filesystems are mounted rw or r? |
Example:
/dev/hdb3 on / type xfs (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)
usbdevfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw)
/dev/hdb1 on /boot type xfs (rw)
Note the stuff in parentheses. Seems you might need to remount
the filesystems rw. Something like 'mount -a -o rw' might work.

Hi all,
I have been trying for 30 months to set up a simple
sendmail/fetchmail/procmail/mutt combination, for use on a home dialup

I set up the windows equivalent after reading 5 minutes of
text, resuming, I clicked setup in mailwarrior or pegasus or eudora,
and entered the name of my smtp and pop server, and that was it.
But I don't want to read mail under windows, as I can never
trust the binaries. It is essential that the programs be compiled from
source code. Which was what I thought linux was all about.
I have asked the same question here every 6 months, and have
not had a single helpful answer yet
My system is completely built from source code, and I had to
reinstall from scratch various times after sendmail/exim/others fsckd
up with my system - a very painful experience , takes about 2 weeks. I
now have a tarred base version of my system on CD, so I just do a
mke2fs from a rescue floppy and untar my system back again .
|
You are basically insane, although in a good way. Do not build from
scratch unless you have a *lot* of time on your hands, which you
apparently do.
Did you set /etc/shells to list "/bin/bash" as a valid shell? And try to
stay a bit *behind* the bleeding edge for new packages, and actually
read the docs. Not reading them is not a proof of how cool and smart you
are, it's a proof that you're a silly, silly person.
| Quote: | So here comes my six-monthly question :
Can anyone point me to a sendmail/procmail/fetchmail/mutt
HOWTO, FROM SOURCE CODE !!!! Please do not suggest 1000 page books or
FAQS, or obsolete versions. I just want to do, say, in 8 hours, what
windows took me 5 minutes to do.
Here I go, :wq vim, killing mp3blaster (oK, lets finish
hearing "tears in heaven" first), unmounting filesystems, rebooting,
firing up agent, just to send this message (yes, slrn uses
sendmail).....is linux viable ????
|
Sendmail is a non-trivial and rather arcane package. I urge the O'Reilly
book *and the docs*, and starting from a working package and tweaking
from *that* instead of building from scratch. Rebuild the package if you
want, but getting all the potential options to play nice together is
like forging your own motorcycle from iron and aluminum more. You *will*
make mistakes.... |

There are ways to install an entire OS from a network site as a system
image, but I don't think you're ready to go there. Can you open the box
and temporarily attach a CD or floppy drive? |

| Quote: | I know this is a common problem in setting up dual-boot systems. I've
searched through the newsgroups; apparently the likely cause is some
mismatch in disk geometry. But I've tried messing with those settings in
lilo.conf without succeeding. So here's the relevant information; maybe
one of you can diagnose it better than I.
snip
By default, my lilo.conf came this way:
# Support LBA for large hard disks.
#
lba32
#linear
# Specifies the boot device. This is where Lilo installs its boot
# block. It can be either a partition, or the raw device, in which
# case it installs in the MBR, and will overwrite the current MBR.
#
boot=/dev/hde2
snip
Brian
The boot loader can be either on the MBR or on a partition BIOS parameter |
block,"BPB."
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/LILO-2.html#ss2.1
From your lilo.conf, it looks like the loader is on the BPB, and not on
the MBR. I think in this case, you would
1.Fix lilo.conf: boot=/dev/hde
2.Install LILO on the MBR of hde
3.Save that MBR as a file (as I presume you have been doing.)
BTW, I switched to grub as the loader. It works for me as the overall boot
manager.

ooh, getting warmer!
The only problem is, that when I run the command you gave me the second

solaris login screen on my redhat machine and still be able to view my
redhat gnome desktop. I'm I asking for cake and eat it too?
Maybe I have to go with vnc, anyone know how well vnc would be able to
handle this? I really don't want to use vnc, I would like to minimize the
number of layers.
Thanks.

How do I (remotely) bring up a solaris login screen from my redhat 9 machine?
Basically I want to just be able to open up a gnome-terminal and be able
make an xdmcp connection to a remote solaris machine and launch a cde login
screen on my redhat machine. Or just simply rsh into my solaris machine
and xhost back a solaris welcome screen.
I'm using gdm and redhat 9
Remote machine is solaris 9.
X -query <solaris> -once :1
from the command line should start a second X server with an XDMCP
connection to your Solaris machine. This will be available on
ctrl-alt-F8 unless you've changed the default TTYs.

Hello,
I'd like to setup vsftpd to only allow connections from local
processes
such that I could create a ssh tunnel to my server and connected to
the
ftp daemon through the tunnel, but it wouldn't listen to any remotely
accessable port? I see in the docs how to allow access to local
users,
thats not quite what I'm looking for though.
Thanks
Hmm.. what is the ultimate goal? If it is to transfer files securely;
you
can use SFTP, which is installed by default as a subsystem to SSH. Are
you
trying to do FTP over SSL using VSFTP?
ken k
What I want to do is use the FTP protocol securely. The software I use
to edit files (BBEdit) doesn't support sftp, only ftp (port 21) so I
want to tunnel through my local computer to my server at home's FTP port
BUT I don't want any computers to be able to connect to the FTP port
without going through a tunnel.
|
use the native SSH port forwarding. you will need to forward ports 20 and
21. this will allow you SSH into your remote machine, then use LOCALHOST
from your client. the SSH port forwarding will then send the requests
through the tunnel. The lock down ports 20-21 on your box using IPTABLES or
your firewall/router. Then the connection can only be made from a valid
user with SSH access and port forwarding enabled.
I can't quite remember, but I think if you wanted to wrap FTP with SSL then
you would need a client that suports that also.

Also check the kde setup. There is a "timer" in there which also kicks
in after a short time. Ie, it is not just the screensaver you have to
worry about but also kde.
What happens when you hit a key. Does it pop back up? |

Get Mandrake 9.1 instead.
Its installer will non-destructively shrink windows partitions
(including the ntfs filesystem used by Win2000 and WinXP) to make space
for linux in the size that you specify and will also automatically set
up a dual boot system when it detects the presence of a windows
bootable partition.
You don't need a third party partition program. |
