Hi,
I am currently setting up an ACER Travelmate 5730 Laptop with Fedora 9,
in addition to the existing Windows Vista.
This computer came with a recovery partition located in /dev/sda1
(partition type 0x27).
I now installed the Linux /boot-Partition in /dev/sda1 (I have my
recovery on DVD, that's enough), left the installed Windows in
/dev/sda2, and /dev/sda3 contains a big Volume Group for all remaining
Linux partitions.
What I experience is following: During system boot, the partition type
of /dev/sda1 is always returned to 0x27 - independent of what system I
boot or of the boot device (hard disk or DVD). I assume that the ACER
Bios, or the installed MBR boot strapper, patches the partition table to
always hide the assumed recovery partition.
Has anyone experience with installing Linux on pre-configured ACER
Notebooks and knows advice to make the first partition table entry
usable again?

Well, I believe I have found the solution. As simple as it is, there is
a Bios switch called "Acer D2D recovery option". (Wonder why I didn't
recognize it earlier.) As it seems, the partition type is not being
altered any more after disabling this option.
