It just could not stay alive for a long time in my legacy P3 700MHz and
Asus CUBX motherboard. What the hell is it doing?

Works fine here on multiple architectures as x86_64, Sparc and PowerPC.
Just to be on the safe side download the 2.6.27.4 and compile from a fresh
config instead of reusing your old one.

YOU wouldn't build your own kernel, would you? You are a monk-nun. You
only use conservative debian pkgs.... :)

Of course I build my own kernel. I'm rarely more than one release version
behind the current. Looks like I've got one to do today... 2.6.27.4 is
out and I'm still on 2.6.27.3.
As for debian, I wouldn't touch that crap with a 10-foot pole.

"Despite its suffix, skepticism is not an "ism" in the sense of a belief
or dogma. It is simply an approach to the problem of telling what is
counterfeit and what is genuine. And a recognition of how costly it may
be to fail to do so. To be a skeptic is to cultivate "street smarts" in
the battle for control of one's own mind, one's own money, one's own
allegiances. To be a skeptic, in short, is to refuse to be a victim.

I don't run crap. I run Slackware.

That's as crappy as Debian, which is my favorite.

It changes on its own. Sometimes I can be arsed to change it, sometimes
I can't. So sue me.

Indeed, running 2.6.27.4 on two servers, a desktop and numerous laptops...
Not a hiccup. I do have a few older Compaq laptops that are having issues
with the B43 driver for Broadcom chipsets... However, turning off DMA in
favor of PIO has eliminated the problems.
Can wait for 2.6.28... :')

I guess legacy hardware should stay with 2.6.26.x kernels until someone
blessed the kernel to support old stuff.... :)

Or maybe 2.6.28 could sprang over the problems of 2.6.27...

Wouldn't say that the UltraSparc is fast, it's only a 333MHz version,
even if it's 64bit.
The PowerPC and the two AMD machines are a bit faster, forgot my AMD X2
laptop I have.

I can say I never have had to wait that long, there was one case on the
PowerPC that I had to wait until a x.z.y.Q version was relesed before I
could upgrade safely (the gigabit driver broke). I do suggest you start
with a fresh config and the 2.6.27..4.
Surely it will go well, don't enable too much of the new stuff, try to
be conservative with SLAB/SLUB.
