Greetings:
I've installed (clean) Opensuse 11.0 and tried to install VMware
Workstation 4.5.2. Even after applying various any-any patches (115, 116,
117 (b, c, and d)), vmware.config crashes out when trying to compile the
modules. Admittedly, I told it to use gcc 4.3 despite being warned.
I then installed VMware Server 1.0.8 and this time there were no problems
installing (also with gcc 4.3). I copied over my legacy VMworkstation
Windows98 virtual machine, opened it with VMware Server, and allowed it
to be upgraded. It then worked fine, except that I could not access my
host only network (Windows: "network cannot be accessed"). I did note
that the vmware-config for Workstation asks you for a user name and
password whereas the vmware-config for Server does not. Also, the program
vmware-smbpasswd, which allows you to add users to the Workstation, does
not exist in the Server installation.
I shall probably have to wait until an any-any update appears that fixes
the problem, but any comments and suggestions would be welcome.

existing instances (windows and several downloadable linux distributions).
If you need to start a new virtual machine I use vmmanager from sourceforge
(runs in wine).
For the vmware-smbpasswd etc. just use a standard samba server of your Linux
distro.

I have under OpenSuse 11.0, without any patches. I ignored the gcc
version warning:
VMware Workstation 6.5.0 build-118166
VMware Server 2.0.0 build-116503
VMware Player 2.5.0 build-118166
They all work just fine.

The same here. Everything works fine, except networking. I'm not sure,
but I think it once worked when I was connected directly via ethernet
cable in the institute. At home (it's a laptop ), I use a wireless
LAN router to connect to my ISP which works very well under Linux.
So, how does one change the network settings to use simply the actual
network running in the underlying Linux box? Perhaps, somebody can
point me to the right description in a man page/help file?

You need to run the vmware-config.pl script to change networking

Thanks for the hint (and to others who replied). I have now got host-only
networking from my Windows98 VM using VMware Server 1.0 under openSUSE
11.0. The following notes(gleaned in part from
<http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/topic/zugriff-auf-host-dateisystem-aus-vmware-serve/#post-1659616>
a.k.a.<http://tinyurl.com/6ptzrz>) might be of use to someone:
1) VMPlayer installs OK under openSUSE 11.0 and is configured OK by
vmware-config. The complaint about the gcc version is a red herring because
the gcc installed by openSUSE 11.0 is in fact 4.3.1 (and not 4.3. as
claimed by vmware-config).
2) My original Win98 VM was built/updated by VMware Workstation 4.5.2 and
was refused point blank by VMware Player (too old).
3) VMware Server 1.0 installs and configures OK and was able to upgrade my
bewhiskered Win98 VM, with no networking at this stage.
4) Configure the Win98 VM:
Start->Settings->System->Network->Configuration->TCP/IP->Properties->IP
Address-> "Get automatically"
Start->Settings->System->Network->Configuration->TCP/IP->Properties->WINS
Configuration-> "Use DHCP for WINS resolution"
(My W98 is German so some menu items might not be 100% correct in English)
5) Install Samba (Yast2)
6) Make an appropriate smb.conf file (Samba configuration) in
directory /etc/samba
I took the old one from the time when VMware delivered its own Samba version
and modified it. YMMV, but the following (bumf removed to save space)
WORKS!
; Configuration file for Samba operating on vmnet1.
[global]
interfaces = vmnet1
bind interfaces only = yes
workgroup = WORKGROUP
server string = VMware hostfile
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
null passwords = yes
load printers = yes
socket options = TCP_NODELAY
lock directory = /etc/vmware/vmnet1/smb/var/locks
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
local master = yes
preferred master = yes
dns proxy = no
[homes]
browseable = no
writable = yes
[printers]
path = /tmp
browseable = no
guest ok = no
writable = no
printable = yes
[HostFS]
path = /home/les
public = no
writeable = yes
printable = no
read only = no
case sensitive = no
follow symlinks = no
msdfs proxy = no
wide links = no
7) Add yourself to the smbpasswd file. This is what nearly drove me bonkers
because the VM refused my password (same as my Linux password) when I tried
to open the host-only network from the Win98 interface. In the end I had a
eureka moment and gave myself a null password - as root in a Linux console:
smbpasswd -n les
8) Make sure there is a line
null passwords = yes
in smb.conf
9) Start the samba daemon (as root)
smb start
10) When you double click on Network environment in the Win98 VM you should
now be able to browse your home directory on the Linux system.
I don't know whether the password problem is a bug or a feature - or even a
mistake somewhere on my part - but for a host-only network it's not a
serious security problem IMO.
