When I connect using dhcp, I'm not getting a default route set, though
the DNS servers are being set. If I add a default route by hand
everything is fine. Why would this not get set automatically?

I'm running dhclient-3.0.5 on a centos 5.2 system.

For the record: the solution is to use separate profiles so that the
gateways set for static connections do not interfere with the use of
dynamic gateways.

Have you got more than one gateway? Is the dhcp server also the gateway?
Is the dhcp server configured to issue default gateway information via
"option routers"?
