People accuse me of being a troll or a fanboi when I claim that Vista
x64 has been largely painless.
Well, I do not have this impression. On the contrary, to me you appear
to be one of those few persons who know what they are talking about.
Can I put you down for a reference? :)
And with time 64 bit OSs will be the
systems of choice. The regular point-and-click-users won't feel any
difference anyway.
The best endorsement I can give is that my Mum is running Vista x64. If
anybody is going to screw it up, it's her.

I'm running 64bit Vista here and loving it. Started off as an
experiment and dual booted it with my old copy of XP Pro but after a
while I realised it had been months since I'd booted to XP so I
uninstalled it and gained back the space.
Only ever had one problem(?). I 'borrowed' a printer from work years
ago so I could work from home - an old HP PSC750 all in one job. There
are no 64bit drivers you can download from HP but there is a driver for
it built into Vista. This means I can use the printer/scanner etc but I
don't have the usual HP toolbox and software etc that you normally get
as part of the driver package. TBH not having some HP bloatware on my
PC is something I can live with. |

Thats next on my shopping list. The reviews of the card (particularly
under Vista) are almost all outstanding. |

HP were one of several (predominantly printer-) companies who decided not to
produce drivers for devices beyond a year or two old; presumeably in the
hope of selling more new stock. Thankfully Vista came with many WDDM drivers
for such devices - but like you say, you miss out on some of the nice bells
& whistles.
Still, at least your 'borrowed' printer still works! |

I've used mostly onboard sound for years. I've never noticed any
difference in quality as I only use digital outputs, toslink to
amplifier. And yes, I get satisfaction from the fact that once
expensive sound cards have been reduced to just another serial
interface...
As I understand it, reasonable quality for analog sound output is
fairly hard with a PC as it's a rather noisy environment and is
unlikely to exist in any kind of on board solution. |

Works perfectly and the daughters also use it through the network (they
also have Vista)... though I have to admit that my 'procurement'
techniques have just netted a nice colour laserjet from the same source
so it will retire soon |
