++++ This is NOT from a Windows Troll! +++++
I am writing this using Win$ows on my Laptop.
The power supply in my 12 year old Pentium II 233Mhz died and killed everything
by apparently feeding 240V AC to the MB and hard drives. The PC was running Suse
7.3 24/7 and has to be replaced with something state of the art to be used for:
- General purpose PC (Word Processing, etc)
- Samba Server
- Mail Server
- Web Server
- X-client
- Turbo "C", C++ Builder, in virtual DOS or Windows
- Video Editing and Processing
- DVD & Blue Ray Burning
- HDTV Receiver for Australia
- Video Recording
- Several Virtual Boxes for Windows 2000, XP, Vista and yes, MS-DOS, Windows 98)
Planned Hardware:
- 64 bit 4 processor CPU
- 16 GB Ram
- 3 x 1 TB Drives as Raid Array
- Dual Monitors
- High performance Video Card for dual Monitors, HDTV
- HDTV Receiver to record two channels at the same time in Australia.
- Suitable Mother Board with spare PCI slots, Ethernet port.
The Operating System would probably be SUSE 11.X
I would like to receive recommendations for suitable hardware and software.
Specifically for:
- Processor
- Mother Board
- Video Card
- File System
- KDE or Gnome?
- Video Editing and Processing Software
- CD, DVD & Blue Ray Burning Software
- Mail Client to replace MS OUTLOOK. Must be functionally the same and able to
import outlook.pst data files and retain full directory structure and data.
Thunderbird does not have the required functions.
Thanks in advance,
Hans |

As fast as you afford.
No idea. See that all the cards fit.
I would go for any NVidea card. As you do not talk about 3d, all cards
should work. I bought 2 of the cheapest cards with both dual screen
capapbility. One card has two 1920x1200 on it and works great. The other
has one 1600x1200 on it.
If you need to ask, go with the default.
I select neither, you can select both

CD+DVD k3b. Blue ray no idea.

Intel is known for having the better processor when it comes to video editing, so i would go for a dual or quad core processor from intel.

I have used asus boards over the years with linux and never had any problems with it. |

Nvidia |

Nero seems to be the only software that can burn blueray, so nero.. |

I dont't know about this one, but evolution seems to be a outlook clone. |
Have a read at: http://projects.gnome.org//evolution/

Ouch! Don't buy that brand of power supply again ..

Just a thought ... you might consider getting TWO PCs, one with very low
power requirement (maybe based around an intel ATOM CPU) to be kept
ruining 24/7 to handle the file, mail, and web servers; and another more
powerful PC to be turned on only when needed for the video editing,
etc., tasks. You might save money on electricity that way (but it
depends how much of the time the more powerful machine would be in use).

You'll probably be looking at server hardware to handle that much RAM
and that many physical processors -- and the CPUs will have to be intel
Xeons or AMD Opterons. It will NOT be cheap ....
If you actually meant a single 4-core CPU you may have trouble finding a
motherboard that will accommodate as much RAM as you've asked for; most
only handle 8GB even in 64-bit mode.
nVidia cards seem generally better supported in linux at the moment, but
exactly what you'll need depends on what you need the hardware to do.
You may wish to use quite specialist hardware for video editing (and
that's not my field).

Personal choice, really. As the PC is essentially general purpose the
default filesystem is probably the safest bet ... but if you were ONLY
doing video editing it might pay you to choose a system that's optimized
for rapid access to very large files. Again, not really my field.

It's "Blu-Ray", by the way, not "Blue Ray" -- the laser isn't even blue,
it's violet!

Outlook is a really crappy mail client, I can't see why anyone would
want to emulate that in linux.
The nearest thing is probably Evolution. Evolution can connect to
Exchange servers and act as an outlook-replacement on linux in a mixed
Windows/linux environment (with some limitations) ... but I don't think
it can import .pst files. There is a conversion tool but that it can't
convert everything.
Cheers,
Daniel. |

ACK, that might be a useful. But then it will be hard to find a X86
system with low power consumption based e.g. on Atom that allows for a
RAID system. This is native terrain of embedded systems. But these tend
to be slow.
Intel's D945GCLF does have a (single) PCI slot, but AFAIR no PCIe and
fast Ethernet only. So it could be combined with a RAID controller, but
not a very fast one, and just with limited network speed.

Some Intel chipsets on Desktop boards allow for 16GB. But then most
mainboards just have four slots, and 4GB modules are rare and tend to
be expensive, especially the FBB variant mandatory for the 5400
chipset.

He is likely referring to current "quad core" CPU offerings.
Most server mobos that are affordable will be dual socket, so eight
cores can be had fairly cheaply. Get the EVGA graphics card with the
HDMI out to view your raw/edited A/V works. It is last year's, so is
very cheap, considering the configuration one gets. One could even put
two in. |

Get the LG BR / HD DVD / DVD / CD reader, with the BR-R write
capability.
Less than $150 at Fry's at one time... can't be much more now. |

... and the accepted abbreviation for Blu-Ray is "BD" (for "Blu-Ray
Disk"); that's what the disks and drives have printed on them (and what
the logo is supposed to represent).

Typical. The LG GGW-H20L (I think that's the drive you mean) is around
UK£150 -- so, 50% more, over here!
There's a Pioneer drive that's faster for around UK£175.
Still ... I recall paying more for CD-ROMs drives when they were new and
exciting. The prices will become sensible in another 6-12 months.
Cheers,
Daniel. |
