Anyone tried setting up SuSE 11 on either an ASUS eee or Acer Aspire
yet? I'm thinking about getting an eee and repartitioning the XP
install to do a dual boot with SuSE. They sell Linux versions of
these netbook machines, so it looks like it would work fine, but I
thought I'd ask if anyone else had done something like this. |

I have Eee PC 900 running openSUSE 11.0
I followed instructions from these:
http://paleheretic.blogspot.com/2008/07/installing-opensuse-11-on-eeepc-900.html
http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_on_the_EeePC
Works great, I connect via NIC, Wi-Fi and GPRS stick Huawei 169
That one I configured with instructions here:
http://www.greenhughes.com/content/using-huawei-e169g-usb-mobile-internet-modem-eee
Everything works, but 900's battery life is like 2 hours or so.
That goes longer if Wi-Fi is disabled
All normal Packman stuff, video and audio work without problems.

Out of interest, did you load it off a CD drive? My Acer One is currently
running Kubuntu, purely because I cant work out how to get suse to load
of a USB stick (and if so, how?) and I cant be bothered to find an
external CD drive. I would much rather have suse on it - then I'd
actually have half a clue how to make things work.
For the OP, FWIW, everything works on the Acer with the exception of the
wifi indicator light, which stays off whatever the status of the wifi is. |

I used a "workaround" there. I happen to have an external USB IDE
enclosure and I just plugged a normal CD drive to that.

Take a look at
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2008/03/28/usb-suse-flash-drive-install/
This may help install to a USB stick. |

I suppose I should get around to the same - I've got an external drive,
minus its case, sat on top of my PC and I found an old CDROM in the
garage 2 weeks ago when I was looking for something else, but the
combination of the Acer 'just working' and the annoyance that I cant get
suse on a USB means I'll carry on messing around with the USB until I get
to work. |

I glanced at that a while back but, as far as I can see, that gives me an
'installation' on a USB, rather than an 'installer' if you see what I
mean? Or am I missing something? |

Since I had the "CD option" available I didn't try this:
http://en.opensuse.org/OpenSUSE_on_the_EeePC
Or did I already post that link?

Hmm, technically, I'm not sure yet, motivationally, yes, I've just had
another go. Using a stick I created with unetbootin, I added the steps
from:
http://blog.sontek.net/2007/09/28/installing-suse-without-a-cd-rom/
and now it does boot, but then spits out with a 'cant find cdrom drive'
error. You link mentions this (well, a link from it) on this, but I dont
seem to get a chance to change anything before it reboots.
Still, its not like I cant play with this while watching tv... |
