What dose everyone think in terms of is it good to use and if there is
better out there, I dont mind much if it uses a bit of pc resources.

there 3 free solutions for home users:

AntiVir Personal
Avast Home
AVG Free

and ClamWin which is based on ClamAV.

I'm using ClamAV now because I was tired of the daily advert when using
AVG Free and/or AVAST.

I don't mind paying $20/year, but anything over that has me looking at
free/open source options.

I started by using MoonAV, which is also based on ClamAV, but the
interface was too buggy and stopped d/l'ing updates if I touched any of
the configuration settings.

Are you talking about the "Notification" panel that drops down below the
prog window? Sheesh. I just drag the window down to bury that thing below
the screen. I had forgotten that it was even there. Had to drag the window
pull to check!

So that's the trick! I kept closing it. ;-)

avast! antivirus. Free, fast and powerful. No ads, no nag screens. Only
"catch" is that you have to register it every 14 months.

Norton is Junk. After you uninstall Norton, you will want to scan your
system with avast and I would NOT be surprised if avast finds many problems
that Norton ignored/missed. -Dave

I also like Avast and use it on all my systems.

I don't get any advert with Avast. Just a notification when it updates
which disappears in a few seconds.

Think it's the advert that is shown when the software is opened by the
user.

My error! I meant to say AVIRA (http://www.free-av.com).

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the follow up everyone.

I'll have to give AVAST a look-see then if there isn't a daily pop-up.

No ads. with Avast! Even the notification of updating can be turned off.
It does need re-registering every 14 months, but that's easy and Alwil do
it to keep track of the number of users - fair enough in exchange for
'free' software.

ODD. I've been using avast! for a couple of years now and have yet to see a
single advertisement. I use the free edition. Only odd thing about avast!
is that it will anounce in a loud voice once a day that virus definitions
have been updated. You can probably turn that off somehow, but it doesn't
bother me enough to try to turn it off. -Dave

Just for clarity, avira WILL POP UP an advertisement when you launch the
program. I've never seen an ad in avast!, even when I launch the main
program window. -Dave

Avira Personal doesn't scan the mail as it's coming in, but if an
infected email tries to open it will be detected it in the normal way
and you can quarantine it.

Think it's the advert that is shown when the software is opened by the
user.

I just get the opening logo screen which shows Avast Home, license key and
the scanning memory, after which it goes right into avast. No
advertisement that I can see, unless you consider the Avast logo screen to
be advertisement then most software has advertisement (for themselves) on
opening.

You can turn that off, I have on most of my systems, but a few announce.
I'm just too lazy right now to look for the setting. Wink Some systems
don't announce but just show the blue box. One I have doesn't show
anything at all when it updates.

Avast is slow. And the free version is crap at detection and false

positives.
