What dose everyone think in terms of is it good to use and if there is
better out there, I dont mind much if it uses a bit of pc resources.

there 3 free solutions for home users:

AntiVir Personal
Avast Home
AVG Free

and ClamWin which is based on ClamAV.

I'm using ClamAV now because I was tired of the daily advert when using
AVG Free and/or AVAST.

If you don't like these adverts then don't try Avira AntiVir. It has
the most intrusive Advert screen I have ever seen (Large window, on
top of everything else and caused some games to hang). I thought *it*
was a virus when it first appeared.

I'm now using AVG which is much less irritating.

Avast is sarting to slow my system down.

Doesn't slow mine - I've tried it with Avast on and off, for opening apps.,
processing things and browsing.
In fact, for browsing, it seems a tad faster with Avast on (within the
bounds of speedtests of course).

I don't see how modern virus checkers can fail to slow your computer
down since they normally intercept (every?) file open operation to
scan the file for malware.

Virus checkers also use rootkit technology to hide quantined files
etc.

Strange thing is my Norton 2005 version seems to be on a never pay loop, it
keeps moving the renew date to the next year and I havnt paid a cent since
2005 to today I have asked the tech team at Norton about this but I asked
for a phone number to speak to someone but all 4 times the number was wrong,
I dont want to get stung with 4 years of paying subscription so I want to
get rid of it. Dose this happen alot or am I just lucky?

Thanks

I recommend PTP Yankem Security. It is entirely free, nothing to buy,
and does not need to be downloaded/installed. 100% protection from
anything malicious on the internet.

The idea that a virus checker speeds up your system is just silly
(or maybe a troll).

They can't make you pay if you didn't ask for it. Sounds like
they're not organized enough to ever notice, anyway.

But if you want something else - Norton is crap - this is
considered very good:
ESET NOD 32 Antivirus Version 3.0

You can get it for less than ½ price from www.purplus.com.

There's also a "security suite" if you really don't know what
you're doing on the net.

Uninstall 2005 completely, including all folders, files, and registry
entries, and reinstall it. That may give you free updates for the
virus definitions.

Download the norton uninstall tool and follow up your uninstall
with it.

I have seen reports in magazines that say Nortons 2009 product
is not it's former pig self. Maybe worthwhile. I'm shocked
that they improved if it is true. Always gets high success
marks.
