OK, I discovered the answer, but I'm still lost. Lemme explain.
I shoved d1 slack cd (12.1) in my cd drive (hdb) while I'm in KDE. Up pops
KDE daemon window and asks if I wanna open in new window, copy w/ K3B, or do
nothing. I let it mount. Up pops Konqueror file mgr with bogus path:
/media/hdb
cli'ing over to said path, I discover no such mount point. After much beard
pulling (only hair I got) and help from df, I discover path is really
/media/S12_1d1/. Could it be any more cryptic? Yes, it's nice to have
automount for media, but WTF! I need to cli over to said cdrom so
I can install pkg. Howza honest hardworking slack xterm droid
supposed to keep up with this crap?
After unmounting and remounting cdrom again, I notice that same S12_1d1
number given in the KDE daemon window. So, what is this obscure number and
why is konqueror giving me a bogus path? Confused mind wants to know. ;)

If you look more closely, I think you'll see it's "media:/hdb", which
is a URI rather than a path. But your next question is about why the
KDE folks thought /that/ was a good idea, and I don't have a clue. |

I agree. However, there /is/ some logic to that naming convention.
The second qualifier in the path (the "S12_1d1" part) is the volume label of
the CDROM.

If you are going to permit KDE to "automount" your CDROMs for you, you might
as well use KDE to "cli" to the mount as well.
In the Konqueror window that opens when the CDROM automount completes, go to
the "Tools" menu and select the "Open Terminal" option. (With the Konqueror
automount window open, <F4> will also perform this action.) What you get is
a terminal window, executing your shell, with it's current working
directory set to the directory that the automount mounted to.

|
Because, that's the KDE (and likely the LSB) way to show the automount.

I think that that stuff about /media/SL12_1D1 stands for:
Slackware 12.1 disk 1
Not really a bad naming convention, but there must be a way to
configure the automounting to a bit more consintent pathname.
But I wouldn't know how to get there. |

That's right. Thanks PV

The pathname /is/ consistant. It consists of /media/ followed by the
volume name taken directly from the automounted media. In the example
/media/SL12_1D1
the CDROM had a volume label of "SL12_1D1"

Probably, but that's the mount point, which is different from what
Konqueror shows in its location bar.

If there's a way to have KDE automount without letting it generate the
mountpoint based on the volume ID, I don't know it.
I use udev to make the device /dev/opticaldrive, and have an fstab
entry to mount it at /media/opticaldrive/ . This means automount
doesn't happen, but clicking once on the big, shiny CD icon will mount
it. |

You can force automount using fixed mountpoints of your choice by
setting up policy files in /usr/share/hal/fdi/<your_policies>/
I have two policy files to have cd mounted at /media/cdrom and dvd
at /media/dvd
root!! js: cat /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/95userpolicy/50-cdrom.fdi
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<device>
<match key="block.device" string="/dev/hdd">
<match key="block.is_volume" bool="true">
<merge key="volume.policy.desired_mount_point"
type="string">cdrom</merge>
</match>
</match>
</device>
</deviceinfo>
root!! js: cat /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/95userpolicy/50-dvd.fdi
<deviceinfo version="0.2">
<device>
<match key="block.device" string="/dev/hdc">
<match key="block.is_volume" bool="true">
<merge key="volume.policy.desired_mount_point"
type="string">dvd</merge>
</match>
</match>
</device>
</deviceinfo>
The problem is that you have to make sure that the mountpoints
don't exist before automounting.

The 'mount' command will tell you where the CD is mounted.
$ mount
<cut>
/dev/hda on /media/CDROM type iso9660 (ro,nosuid,nodev,noatime,uid=500,utf8)

Well, have fun, but that's not bash, that are XML-chunks, that
are merged into the main HAl configuration at boot.
