I got them working by giving write permissions to that directory.
However, both xnethack and nethack-qt lack graphical tiles, and instead
show the same ascii graphics as the vanilla-nethack. That kind of defies
the whole purpose.
Any suggestion how I could get the graphical tiles?

Yeah. It's called Google Search Engine.
nethack tiles: 21,700 hits.
First on the list is a comparison site, so you can decide which set you
want to get. |

Nice graphics, but not very helpful. xnethack is still showing ascii
characters. I suppose it doesn't understand google.
Any better suggestions? |

Look, brainiac, you look at the site to decide what tiles you like,
then search for those tiles, download them, and use them.
More like I suppose YOU do not understand google.
It is not a pushbutton world. Sometimes YOU have to do a little
reading, and YOU have to manually configure text files, etc. to get the
desired operational mode. Sometime you just have to have a bit of common
sense.
Since there are SEVERAL versions of nethack that play under Linux WITH
tilesets, I suggest that you do a little more hunting, instead of wanting
your entire life handed to you on a platter. |

You are being exactly as unhelpful as google is.
Exactly where is it clearly explained how to configure xnethack or
nethack-qt to use tiles on a linux system?
First google hit for "nethack tiles": A comparison chart which doesn't
explain how to actually *use* the tiles.
Next google hit: Another comparison chart which doesn't explain anything.
Next google hit: The wikipedia page for nethack, which doesn't explain
how to use tiles.
Next google hit: A bit better. It gives someone's custom tile file
(I suppose it's better than the ascii chars) and an actual configuration
line to set it up. However, it doesn't tell precisely where the tiles
file should be put (it just says "save the file to your NetHack or SLASH'EM
directory", which is rather unhelpful) nor where the configuration option
should be put (I tried ~/.nethackrc and ~/.xnethackrc, using the full path
to the tiles file, to no avail).
Next google hit: Claims to have nethack tiles, but has nothing.
Next google hit: Talks about putting the option configuration in a
"defaults.nh" file. There's no such file in my entire system. Also doesn't
specify where exactly the tiles file should be put.
Next google hit: List of historic nethack tiles. Not very helpful.
Next google hit: A tiles image, no instructions.
Next google hit: An unrelated forum post.
Next google hit: Another page with tiles file and instructions which
refer to some unspecified "nethack directory" and a "defaults.nh" file.
Next google hit: A usenet post about nethack on PocketPC.
Next google hit: A graphical interface program for nethack.
Next google hit: A nethack editor.
Next google hit: Some tiles, no instructions.
Next google hit: Some strange forum.
Need I continue? |

Once you find it, you'll know. Why do you want others to dig up your
answers for you? Fact is, folks use tilesets with nethack in Linux.
Therefeore you shouldn't have a problem performing such a simple task as
this is. It's not like you are writing a protein folding distributed
computing application.
Why don't you try one of the nethack versions/front ends (that's all it
is) that ALREADY utilize tiles?
Why do you have X or qt welded into your mindset?
| Quote: |
First google hit for "nethack tiles": A comparison chart which doesn't

No, as I already stated once, it is there to allow you to decide which
one you think is appealing to you. Then, you write down the name of that
tileset, and then you source that tileset.
What I cannot figure out is why you are not asking this question in the
nethack forum. This game is the most ported game in history, so you can
bet that many of the folks in those forums can tell you exactly what you
want to know, since you seem to be hell bent on a specific type of
nethack, when there are several that operate under Linux distros of
various flavors, using everything from SDL to qt to ASCII. Since you are
so smart, I am sure you already knew this.
| Quote: | Next google hit: Another comparison chart which doesn't explain anything.

No, when a dope like you give a goddamned cursory glance at the main
nethack wiki page, your answer doesn't pop out at you. Had you actually
invested some reading time into the TASK, however, you might have found
what you wanted. Being the impatient bastard that you appear to be, I
would say that you spent no time reading the site at all. Not to mention
that there are forum links there as well. Hell, Usenet has several
groups keyed toward it.
I get the distinct feeling that you are a lazy bastard. I am surprised
that your follow up posts were not top posted.

I suggest you start with plain nethack from a 3.5" floppy and a 3.5"
DOS boot floppy. You are not ready for something as advanced as the
World Wide Web yet or you would have found your answer. Therefore, I
suggest that you spend a couple years booting the DOS boot disc, and then
inserting the nethack disc, and playing it, and actually reading the
files that accompany it, so THEN... MAYBE... you will learn that some
games REQUIRE reading, and familiarizing of one's self with the directory
hierarchy, etc.
| Quote: | Next google hit: Claims to have nethack tiles, but has nothing.
|
YOu seem to have found more time to rattle off this non-sense than you
had to actually LOOK for what you are after. "LOOKing" REQUIRES reading
as well. The world is not all pushbutton or voice controlled yet.
| Quote: | Next google hit: Talks about putting the option configuration in a
"defaults.nh" file. There's no such file in my entire system. Also doesn't

|
Had you read the basic nethack file, you would have found out about
needed files, and there structure, etc. Since nethack can be played on
several platforms, the archive directory hierarchy is a bit vague, by
requisite. There are things the user must do AFTER the compile.

Well, then I haven't found it. The only thing I have found is that the
tiles image should be put "in the nethack directory". Of course every page
which says this is talking about the Windows port of nethack, not the unix
version. In my system the "nethack directory" could be any of:
/etc/nethack
/usr/lib/nethack
/usr/share/doc/packages/nethack
/usr/share/games/nethack
/var/games/nethack
Nowhere have I found which one of those is "the nethack directory" they
are talking about.
I have tried putting the tiles file in all of those, and I have tried
putting the following line in the nethack configuration file:
OPTIONS=tile_file:<the name of the file file>,tile_width:32,tile_height:32
I have also tried specifying the full path to the tile file rather than
just its name.
As configuration file I have tried all of these:
/usr/lib/nethack/options.x11
/etc/nethack/nethackrc.x11
~/.nethackrc
~/.xnethackrc
~/.nethackrc.x11
~/.nethack/nethackrc
~/.nethack/xnethackrc
~/.nethack/nethackrc.x11
~/.nethack/.nethackrc
~/.nethack/.xnethackrc
~/.nethack/.nethackrc.x11
To no avail. None of those have absolutely no effect on xnethack.

will make it real easy to use them (as long as the license allows it).

What I found so far is:
To use the NetHack tiles, save the file to your NetHack or SLASH'EM
directory, and then modify the defaults file as following. For
NetHack:
OPTIONS=tile_file:chozo32.bmp,tile_width:32,tile_height:32
I'd guess that NetHack directory in this case means /usr/lib/netack or
/usr/lib64/nethack. I'll just test one of the next days and report
back.

Nice SNIP of the link that leads you to the page with the TILES ENABLED
versions, and the CHAT forum specifically toward nethack front ends, an
otherwise ASCII game engine add-on. Nice job of failing to ask the real
gurus that are there about your petty problem. If you want plug and
play, you are going to HAVE TO use one of the already packaged versions
OTHER than the qt or X version you seem to have your bent brain wrapped
around.
I suggest you get the ASCII version working first. Then find out what
files were being used, and what files were being referenced. Then,
examine the files to LEARN what they are, and what they do.
That is on the nethack side. THEN, the tileset front end "enhanced"
versions usually have the nethack config files PLUS the front end config
files.
IF you start with Vulture's Eye or Noegnud, you can LEARN how they are
structured, and PERHAPS, you might lose just enough of the cluelessness
you are wandering the globe with, and figure what it is that YOU are
doing wrong.
I am sorry, but there is no link for YOUR mistakes. |
