|
|
This may be a silly question. How do I upgrade from FC3 to FC4 using
yum? It does seem silly to have to start fro iso images to make that
jump, but I don't know what to do to repos files etc so that yum does
the switch for me. Is there a way to by-pass what uname -r is telling
yum?
As a related question, if I am using a custom built kernel based on FC3
so that uname -r returns 2.6.11.7-hollycow for example is there a way
to get back to grabbing updates from Fedora's repositories for
update-released via Yum -- or maybe this is a bad/flawed idea to begin
with?
Thanks in advance! |

I'd go to FC5, but in either case...
grab the FC4/FC5 fedora-release .rpm file and
rpm -Uhv that-file
then
try and do a
yum upgrade
and see what happens. By updating your fedora-release
package, your system will think that you are at the
new version and yum upgrade will do the rest.
If you can yum upgrade yum and yum upgrade kernel
before you do the rpm -Uhv on the fedora-release file,
things might go faster/smoother.

I'd go to FC5, but in either case...

Don't be too sure that the latest is always the best - last I checked
(a few days ago) 5 still had at least a few serious bugs that 4
didn't. |

There is a very good howto at
http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/Upgrading_Red_Hat_Linux_with_yum.html
You will find also a few things to note there to avoid problems.

Everything has bugs. I'm running FC5 on 6 of my boxes and don't
have any major issues on any of them. FC5 has upgrades to Evolution
and mysql. Those are both important to me.

I'm not knocking FC5. I'm just saying there can be good reasons for
using something earlier or different, especially so soon after FC5's
initial release, especially since Fedora is somewhat aggressively
developed and the latest release tends to be somewhat experimental. I
happen to be using CentOS 4 right now, but I have used FC5, and may go
back to it (or FC4) sooner or later. |
